Discord Alternatives in 2026: Free, Open-Source and Buy-Once Options for Communities

By · Published

Short answer: Discord is free and sells no lifetime licence, so most communities have no reason to leave. If you want a chat server you own, Zulip, Mattermost, Element and Rocket.Chat each offer a free self-hosted edition, and Zulip's free cloud plan includes 10,000 messages of history and 5 GB of storage. If you would rather pay once for a community platform, the live AppSumo deals checked on 24 October 2026 include GoBrunch at $89 (rated 4.77 from 333 reviews) and FuseBase at $79 (4.68 from 607), each with a 60-day refund window.

Why people look for a Discord alternative

The reasons are usually practical. A server you do not control can be suspended or reshaped without notice, the interface overwhelms members who only want announcements and a few threads, and there is no way to pay once and stop thinking about it.

Everything below was checked on 24 October 2026: vendor pricing pages for the open-source options, the live AppSumo catalog for the buy-once ones.

Who should stay on Discord

Discord costs nothing to run, your members almost certainly already have it installed, and switching means asking every one of them to sign up somewhere new. For a gaming group, a hobby server or any community that lives on voice chat, that friction outweighs everything below.

Discord does not sell a one-time plan, so a "buy-once Discord alternative" always means a different product, not a cheaper Discord.

Free and open-source servers you can run yourself

Zulip. Zulip is open source and comes in cloud and self-hosted forms. Cloud Free includes 10,000 messages of history and 5 GB of storage. Cloud Standard is $6.67 per user per month on annual billing or $8 monthly, and Cloud Plus is $10 per user per month annual or $12 monthly with a 10-user minimum.

The self-hosted edition is free with all features, with mobile notifications limited to 10 users for non-eligible organisations. Paid self-hosted plans are Basic at $3.50 per user per month and Business at $6.67 per user per month on annual billing with a 25-user minimum (zulip.com/plans, checked 24 October 2026).

Mattermost. The pricing page lists a Mattermost Free edition without detailing its features, plus Professional and Enterprise tiers sold as prepaid annual per-seat contracts through sales. No public prices are shown, so budget a sales call if you need the paid features (mattermost.com/pricing, checked 24 October 2026).

Element. Element's Community edition is free, self-hosted and open source under the AGPL, and the pricing page describes it as "for non-professional deployments and evaluations". Enterprise is priced per seat per month through sales, and a Sovereign edition is priced per deployment (element.io/pricing, checked 24 October 2026).

Rocket.Chat. Rocket.Chat offers "a free self-managed workspace" with its core collaboration and security features. Starter, Commercial and Government plans are priced through sales, and voice and video are sold as add-ons (rocket.chat/pricing, checked 24 October 2026).

Stoat, formerly Revolt. On 24 October 2026, revolt.chat redirected to stoat.chat, so the project has moved to a new name and domain. We did not verify Stoat's plans, so treat older "Revolt pricing" as out of date.

Guilded. Another free option; we did not check its pricing.

In every case the free edition is real, but it costs a server to run or comes with cloud limits. None of the four sells a lifetime licence.

Buy-once community platforms on AppSumo

AppSumo does not sell Discord, and none of the deals below is a Discord clone. They are community, collaboration and messaging products sold as one-time licences, which is the only way to pay once for a community platform. Every AppSumo Marketplace deal carries the 60-day money-back guarantee printed on its page.

Live on 24 October 2026:

  • GoBrunch — $89 against a $870 list price, rated 4.77 from 333 reviews, listed under Community Platforms as an AppSumo Select deal.
  • FuseBase — $79 against $468, rated 4.68 from 607 reviews, listed under Remote Collaboration. The most-reviewed tool on this page.
  • EzyCommunity — $59, rated 4.50 from 2 reviews, a Launchpad listing. New deal with almost no reviews, so lean on the refund window.
  • The Sauce — a Plus exclusive at $0 for AppSumo Plus members, rated 3.67 from 9 reviews. Plus itself is $99 a year (checked 5 September 2026).
  • Bit Assist — $49 against $95, rated 4.94 from 70 reviews, under WhatsApp & Messaging.
  • AnyChat — $49 against $108, rated 4.75 from 154 reviews, under WhatsApp & Messaging.
  • Support Board — $69 against $120, rated 4.50 from 103 reviews, under Chatbots & AI Agents.

Smaller Remote Collaboration deals live the same day: NodeLand $19 (list $40, 4.63 from 67), Trainwel $59 (4.50 from 6), Stepsy $39 (3.92 from 48) and Feedbeo $19 (3.80 from 20).

We list these by AppSumo's category, price and rating and have not run a community on each. Read the deal page for tier limits, and remember that a lifetime licence lasts the vendor's lifetime, not yours.

When a one-time community platform makes sense

A buy-once platform is worth it when you are the one paying, not your members: a paid membership, a course cohort, a client portal or a customer-support channel. In those cases a monthly community-software bill is a real cost, and a $49 to $89 licence with a 60-day refund is cheap to test.

It makes less sense when the community is free, large and social. Those groups live or die on how easy it is to show up, and Discord's zero cost and existing install base are hard to beat.

Three checks before you buy:

  1. Review count, not just rating. 4.77 from 333 reviews tells you something; 4.50 from 2 does not.
  2. Shutdown risk. Launchpad deals are new. DealKeep's Founder Track flags tools that look like they are shutting down, and the Buy or Pass check gives a quick read first.
  3. Refund date. Put the 60-day deadline in your calendar the day you buy, or let DealKeep keep every deal in one place and warn you before the window closes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a lifetime deal for Discord?

No. Discord is free to use and does not sell a one-time licence. The buy-once options on this page are separate community and chat products sold on AppSumo, each with the 60-day refund window printed on its deal page.

What is the best free open-source Discord alternative?

Zulip, Mattermost, Element and Rocket.Chat each offer a free self-hosted edition. Zulip also has a free cloud plan with 10,000 messages of history and 5 GB of storage, which makes it the easiest to try without running a server (checked 24 October 2026).

What happened to Revolt?

As of 24 October 2026, revolt.chat redirects to stoat.chat, so the project has moved to a new name and domain. We did not verify Stoat's current plans for this article, so check the site directly before relying on older pricing.
